George lucas7/6/2023 "All of the various colors and shapes of the aliens and everything, that live in that world, it’s a normal situation, there’s no real discrimination. He continues to talk about his take on Star Wars: For all we know, the comment can pertain to how the newer films try to tell their messages, or it could simply be Lucas saying the story events themselves are different from what he had outlined and that he does not have a hand in everything like he used to try to and does not keep up with everything that is going on. Whatever he means by the franchise going in a different path than what he had intended is anyone's guess. Of course, some may latch onto Lucas saying that he has lost control of Star Wars. The quality of that trilogy has been contested by various viewers, but it does have an intended political message. When he mentions "the first three," he of course means the prequel trilogy.

Randall munroe book7/6/2023 The community names by county were the 3x5 research note cards created by Rennick during his thirty years of research on locating place names. The alphabetical list of community names represents the initial draft of the manuscript that eventually became the book Kentucky Place Names. The collection represents Professor Rennick's thirty year quest to document the place names of every community in Kentucky. The majority of this collection, however, was not included in either book. Some of the research and information was later published in books Rennick authored, such as Kentucky Place Names and From Red Hot to Monkey's Eyebrow: Unusual Kentucky Place Names. Rennick Manuscript Collection consists of over 33,000 scanned typescripts and 3x5 index cards defining the origins of community and county names in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Author heather radke7/6/2023 Whether we love them or hate them, think they’re sexy, think they’re strange, consider them too big, too small, or anywhere in between, humans have a complicated relationship with butts. “Lively and thorough, Butts is the best kind of nonfiction.” - Esquire, Best Books of 2022Ī “carefully researched and reported work of cultural history” ( The New York Times) that explores how one body part has influenced the female-and human-experience for centuries, and what that obsession reveals about our lives today. “Winning, cheeky, and illuminating….What appears initially as a folly with a look-at-this cover and title becomes, thanks to Radke’s intelligence and curiosity, something much meatier, entertaining, and wise.” - The Washington Post

China 1421 america7/6/2023 Lost in China's long, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America seventy years before Columbus and circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. The great ships, now considered frivolous, were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. When they returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. Their journey would last more than two years and circle the globe. Their mission was "to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. The ships, huge junks nearly five hundred feet long and built from the finest teak, were under the command of Emperor Zhu Di's loyal eunuch admirals. On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen sailed from its base in China. The incredible true story of the discovery of America before Columbus was even born.Gavin Menzies's extraordinary findings rewrite history.

Gift from the sea lindbergh7/5/2023 Relationships must be like islands, one must accept them for what they are here and now, within their limits - islands, surrounded and interrupted by the sea, and continually visited and abandoned by the tides.” Security in a relationship lies neither in looking back to what was in nostalgia, nor forward to what it might be in dread or anticipation, but living in the present relationship and accepting it as it is now. The only real security is not in owning or possessing, not in demanding or expecting, not in hoping, even. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity when the only continuity possible, in life as in love, is in growth, in fluidity - in freedom, in the sense that the dancers are free, barely touching as they pass, but partners in the same pattern. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. “When you love someone, you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment.

Appointment with death play7/5/2023 This is one effect I call folding, this notion of participants becoming audience. Almost everyone in the room has some secret that is exposed to the others with some surprise. The device is very particular, because these people are both characters in the story, and audience (shared with us), as things are explained. By simple fiat in every story, Poirot is able to get everyone involved in the same space while he recounts how things transpired and why. One of her devices is the Poirot gathering. That's because it is just those structural issues that helped build film, build the way we dream visually. But others, like myself, may be annoyed not by details of the story, but overarching, necessary structural issues. Part of the risk is readers who will be upset with the translation to film. As with Conan Doyle, one can hardly work on her material without taking chances. Christie invented so much, and much of that has found its way into the film vocabulary. |
